Upper Roanoke River Watershed - Data Sources

Below are the sources of the data used in this project.

Base Map:
The base map is a Google Maps API plugin.
Data Measurement Stations:
These are physical locations where various organizations collect weather and water quantity and quality data that is made publicly available. This data was last accessed in February, 2020.
Roanoke River Watershed Boundary:
This data was extracted as XY points from the EDNA Derived Watersheds for Major Named Rivers. These points are used to create a new polygon. The website for accessing EDNA files is https://edna.usgs.gov/watersheds/kml_index.htm, and the link to access the file directly is https://edna.usgs.gov/watersheds/sheds/roanoke/roanoke.kmz. Because watershed boundaries are defined differently at different scales, this boundary does not always align exactly with the boundaries of the subwatersheds within it. This data was accessed Sep. 1, 2017.
Upper Roanoke River HUC12 Subwatershed Boundaries:
These data were obtained from the US EPA WATERSKMZ tool, which is described here: https://www.epa.gov/waterdata/viewing-waters-data-using-google-earth. This data was loaded in Google Earth and zoomed in to the smallest hydrologic units in this dataset (HUC12). This was an eye altitude of 14 to 19 miles. Then each HUC12 boundary was saved as an individual kml file. This data was extracted by hand and loaded into the Google Maps API as a polygon. The link for the KMZ file is: https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2017-12/waterskmz_v1.9_1.kmz. This data was accessed in April, 2018.
Bodies of Water:
These data were obtained from the US EPA WATERSKMZ tool as described in the previous item. This data was accessed in April, 2018.
Waterways:
These data were obtained from the US EPA WATERSKMZ tool as described in the previous item. This data was accessed in April, 2018. Additionally, some portions of Lick Run were mapped by hand in Google Maps.
Doppler Radar Overlay:
These data from the National Weather Service are made available for Google Maps as an image overlay by Iowa State University. This code was accessed on May 11, 2018.
County and City Boundaries:
These were obtained from the United States Census Bureau. This data was accessed on May 12, 2018.
VWCC Service Region:
These were obtained from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). This data was accessed on May 12, 2018.
