NOTE: William's mother is known to be Elizabeth A. Rowe. Usually, this would be a married
surname. However, the marriage below in May, 1858, of Elizabeth to a man 33 years her
senior, followed by William's birth in October, and Elizabeth appearing again in 1860
with her parents and surname Rowe suggests that this was a forced marriage that didn't
last. This is supported by William's 1880 marriage that lists both of his wife's
parents but only his mother. However, I have no proof that William Walden was his
father. The only question is why William would not appear in the 1860 US Census
with his mother. No records of William A. Rowe can be found until his marriages.
